Peebles Bar-B-Que was started in 1947 by Elle and Gladys Peebles. Mr. Peebles drove a school bus and started his small business on the side. The small side job turned into a major landmark in no time. He was soon joined by his two sons to help run the restaurant that had grown incredibly. Later after Mr. Peebles had left the business to his two sons, Dale Strickland married Mr. Peebles youngest daughter Marsha Peebles. Soon after they were married, Mr. Strickland joined the two brothers in the Bar-B-Que business. Mr. and Mrs. Strickland are the current owners and operators today.

I'm a city slicker now but luv...‎
This place & it's survival is incredible. Having grown up in Winter Haven w/folks in Auburndale - seeing the same family run this place & grow up is the closest thing I have to surviving cracker roots in these parts. Nothing is extraordinary 'cept the location & the somewhat high prices for what they deliver. You really expect the cows, pigs & chickens to be grazing out back. Beans seem to have no seasoning ("Sonny's" totally wins the great beans contest)...cole slaw portions too small considering all the rest is greasy meat served to go in a pint or quart. They can't even offer whole grain bread which would be a nice 21st century enhancement. Go though. And observe the people & listen in on their conversations if you can? Watch all the display of local personality. This is a total throwback to another era & In a time of franchised everything - this place is the real thing, even if it does make me question whether we as humans beings ...

Need improvement‎
This place was built in 1947. In my opionion it is over priced and disqusting. For a full slab of ribs, small veggie plate and two ice teas the bill came to 32.00 plus tip. Our ribs were old, leather like meat covered in fat and grease. The small veggie plate of cole slaw that is fresh and tasty, bake beans that taste like they are out of a can, and fresh home made potatoe salad. The white bread is like the tastless bread from the 1950's. The BBQ sauce tastes a lot like A-1 sauce but I think it is homemade and sells for 15.00 a gallon. Someone said that this resturant used to be an old chicken coop. It still looks like one and I guess this is what gives it the rustic feel. The place does not have windows-just screens. The bathrooms are outside of the building and are really gross. There are a lot of selections on the menu like a regular rib plate for 8.95 and pork sandwhichs for 2.70. I really would not reccomend this place to anyone. They need to treat all of the customers the same ...

Nothing Better...
You won't find better BBQ anywhere, and I have sought out BBQ all over this country from East to West. The place looks like it should be torn down, there's no AC, it's crowded, and the bathrooms are outside, but that's part of the character of the place. The food will far surpass anything you have ever had anywhere. It's out of the way, and for a place so popular, it seems like everyone I talk to about it thinks it's their own little secret...

Pros: THE FOOD! 25 foot open pit is a sight in itself, the staff is just awesome...
Cons: Only open 3 days a week, 4 months out of the year. Bring cash; no credit cards accepted

Good barbque by Rosalind C. at InsiderPages
I like this barbque. It is one of the few that I do like. It is worth the drive from Lakeland to get some good food. The prices are about right and the service is great. The appearance is deceiving, the food is good, so don't go by looks.

NONE BETTER!
I was reared in Winter Haven and have been eating Peebles for almost 50 years. We live in Atlanta now and drive from Atlanta to Brooksville, FL, every three months for a retreat. Our trips ALWAYS include a detour to Auburndale to feast on Peebles Barbecue. We've check out barbecue all over the world and have found NONE BETTER than Peebles.
